When we first came across Hein Cooper we were mesmerised by his luscious falsetto which resonates similarly to Jeff Buckley, Hein’s strikingly human lyrics are guarded by intricate and meticulously plucked guitar and his exceptionally beautiful track ‘The Art Of Escape’.

The Art of Escape is the debut track from Cooper’s self-titled EP which was recorded with Marcus Paquin (Arcade Fire, The National, Local Natives, Hey Rosetta). The Art of Escape explores themes of change, escapism and transformation with an earnestness that has become a rarity.

The release has already caught the attention of internationally acclaimed band Tora, racking up just under five million views on Youtube since their ascendance Tora’s sound has been compared to the likes of SOHN, Toro Y Moi and James Blake. Tora’s interpretation evolves the track from a blend of indie and pop into synth drenched, impeccably paced chillwave.
Another astounding remix came from Californian musician currently based in Osaka, Magical Mistakes (a.k.a Erik Luebs). Following the path of other artists, like Bon Iver, Magical Mistakes moved to Shiba-san, one of Japan’s most rural villages, to create his sound. There he was able to draw inspiration from his environment and also from the lineage of contemplative beats crafted by the vibrant community of Osaka artists, such as Shlohmo and Mount Kimbie. It’s clear when listening to Magical Mistakes that his style strives to combine Eastern and Western influences. His tracks are textural, bell-bathed, slow slung electronic compositions blended with organic instrumentation, Japanese motifs, and ambient sounds, that create an immersive underwater effect. Luebs has already seen support from Noisey, XLR8R, The Line Of Best Fit ++ and continues to be praised by tastemakers around the world.
