“Excellent, experimentally minded indie-pop from Europe.”
Pigeons and Planes
“While the irresistible groove and layers of tropical campfire synths make this feel like the perfect carefree jam to soundtrack your tanning sessions”
V Magazine
“Leyya’s “Drumsolo” Is A Layered, Musical Parfait of Sound. The Austrian electro-pop’s newest single is melodic and complex and just plain weird enough to groove endlessly to.”
NOISEY
“’Oh Wow’ is a wonderful entrance point to their world, a real ear-worm of a track that gets under your skin.”
Clash Mag
“Full of bubbly, electronic rhythms, and an interesting sitar inclusion, the upbeat singing of the chorus echoes elements of songs such as Lily Allen’s “Fuck You” with Sophie’s paradoxically soft vocals telling people she doesn’t give a shit what they say about her.”
Wonderland Magazine
“Marco Kleebauer’s electro beats collide with the fragile, soft voice of singer Sophie Lindinger, creating music that sends a chill down the spine.”
Red Bull Music
“One of our favourites in 2017”
BBC Radio 6 Music’s Lauren Laverne
LEYYA have just premiered their glistening, highly anticipated new album titled Sauna via Pigeons and Planes set for release on 26th January 2018 via Las Vegas Records. On the 31st of January, Sauna will undergo a Spotify Homepage Takeover, where for 24 hours, the new album will be presented and available to users within the entire GSA region. The Austrian Indie-pop duo has enjoyed immense success with their most recent single – ‘Drumsolo’ which premiered on Noisey, with the video and live video premiering on Pigeons and Planes, as well as receiving continuous support from BBC Radio 6 Music’s Lauren Laverne. ‘Zoo’ and ‘Oh Wow’ received vast support from Pigeons and Planes, V Magazine, Wonderland Magazine, Clash magazine, Complex, Konbini, The 405, Consequence of Sound, BBC Radio 1’s Huw Stephens and Phil Taggart, BBC 6 Music‘s Lauren Laverne, Virgin Radio Playlist, Radio 1 Playlist in Germany and Austrian FM4’s Radio Charts amongst others. LEYYA are performing at a string of European festivals early 2018, before they head to SXSW Festival, taking their idiosyncratic sound to the USA.
Sophie Lindinger and Marco Kleebauer are the duo behind LEYYA. Their debut album Spanish Disco was an instant success, with hit single ‘Superego,’ racking up over 3 million plays on Spotify and over 560,000 Youtube views, putting the pair on the map, and inciting a whirlwind of huge festival performances and radio play, as well as television and film appearances. Their performance at Iceland Airwaves was called one of the “most exciting” on display by Consequence of Sound, while their show at Eurosonic Nooderslag was branded “The best concert of this year’s Eurosonic Festival” by Musikexpress. Naturally, it comes as no surprise that LEYYA has laid claim to an Amadeus Music Award, and have graced the stages of a host of festivals: New York’s Indie Week, The Great Escape (Brighton, UK), Liverpool Sound City (Liverpool, UK), Tallinn Music Week (Tallinn, EE), PrimaveraSound (Barcelona, SP) and Electronic Beats at Reeperbahn Festival (Hamburg, DE) – before finally headlining Popfest (Vienna, AT) back home, where they played to a crowd of 20,000 in front of the famous Karlskirche in Vienna’s beautiful City Centre.
Leyya’s sophomore album Sauna is a stirringly kaleidoscopic journey through astral planes; the album’s opener and title track begins with a mysterious spoken sample before erupting into an energetic burst of resonant passion. ‘Candy’ is a dub-esque, down tempo delight featuring laid back percussion and playful basslines, while ‘In Your Head’ kicks off with Sophie Lindinger’s hauntingly charming vocal work before exploding into a post-rock inspired whirlwind of distorted guitars and crashing drums. ‘Heat’ is an upbeat, lifting track showcasing the band’s sophisticated song-writing ability. Nearing to a close, ‘We Did OK’ could be Sauna’s ballad; serene, heartfelt vocal work, slow, deep basslines and solidly concise drums and percussion performed by Marco Kleebauer.
Leyya said about the record, “We developed a rougher and more playful sound on Sauna and we focused on instruments and sounds from all over the world, combining them with our way of making music,” Leyya explain. “The vocals and the beat received a spot in the foreground for a more intimate feeling and what was very important to us in the songwriting process was to have different layers so that everyone can find their ‘space’ in that song. You can listen to it as a ‘simple’ pop-song…but you can also dive a little deeper and realise that there is more than that”.
